Description
Once in a great while a movie comes along that truly grips and uplifts its audiences. Such a movie is An Officer And A Gentleman, a timeless tale of romance, friendship and growth. Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot and in thirteen tortuous weeks he learns the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Louis Gossett, Jr. won an Academy Award* for his brilliant portrayal of the tough drill instructor who teaches Zack that no man can make it alone. And while Gossett tries to warn the young officer about the local girls who will do anything to catch themselves pilot husbands, Zack eventually learns to love one (Debra Winger) while his fellow candidate, a memorable character portrayed by David Keith, struggles with a very different fate. An Officer And A Gentleman is a rich and satisfying story with moving performances that will stay with you long after the film has ended.
Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), An Officer and a Gentleman proves to be a no-brainer date movie. --Tom Keogh

Summary: "U.S. buyers, beware!"
I ordered this for my mom's bday because it's her favorite movie.
When she got it, she was sad to learn that it was from the UK and couldn't play on our U.S. DVD player!!!
I was very disappointed. This should have been more clearly marked on the product!

Summary: "Is This DVD A Bootleg Copy?"
I ordered the DVD "An Officer and A Gentleman" from Amazon.com. It arrived the other day, however when I opened up the case, the DVD disc surface does NOT look anything like the disc that my neighbor has, and his was purchased shortly after that DVD became available a number of years ago. In fact, the appearance of the disc surface is identical, except for the lettering, to the disc surface of "Days of Thunder" (Blu-ray) that I also recently purchased from Amazon. In both cases the disc surface is a silver-grey, with silver lettering.
However, in the case of the Days of Thunder disc, the first-level subdirectory was entitled "Top Gun", but the next level had the proper Days of Thunder Blu-ray files. It seems rather odd that both of these disc are so physically similar, and that the Days of Thunder disc had a major manufacturing flaw like having the first sub-directory entitled "Top Gun" but the correct files further down on the disc?
Is there anyway that I can tell for sure? Wouldn't be a real surprise if we were to find out that Amazon was selling hot stuff? LOL!!!

Summary: "Women are soooo gullible!"
I thought this movie was pretty dumb, but after watching this DVD, I wanted to test out one of the theories of this movie ... that women go nuts for a guy in uniform. I wasn't able to locate a Naval Officer's uniform like the one in this movie, but I found an old Michael Jackson - Sgt. Pepper's-style red glittery military jacket at a thrift store with a matching hat. I put that on with some white pants I had and checked out this bar called "Drag City," which I think was named after the Jan & Dean song. I had been curious about Drag City, because there were always a lot of cheap looking women going into that place dressed like celebrities, like Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Joan Crawford, and Diana Ross. So I go in and put on a German accent and announce that I'm Admiral Prince Rupert from the Republic of Republica. All the women were suitably impressed and told me I looked "faaaabulous" and said how much they love a guy in uniform. After several of them participated in a singing contest, a real-horse faced lady dressed like Liza Minelli told me in a really gruff voice that she wanted to go home with me. Again, she was a real dog, but as they say, all the women are pretty at closing time. We went back to her place and when I tried to put my hand below her waist, she swatted it away and snorted that it was her time of the month. She then just worked on me and allowed me to do things most women don't allow guys to do, if you know what I mean (snicker, snicker). And you know what? The same thing has happened every time I've gone back to Drag City. I go home with another woman dolled up to look like a famous movie star or singer, they have really gruff voices (probably from the liquor and cigarettes), and they won't let me go below their waist, but let me do other things. I wondered what the deal was and then realized ... not only are these women are cheap and nasty ... they're STUPID! Ha-ha!

Summary: "An Officer and a Gentleman (Special Collector's Edition)"
Zack Mayo is a loner who has never had to rely on anyone but himself. As a child, he was sent to live with his father, a career Navy man based in the Philippines, after his mother commits suicide. There he soon realized that he had to be tough and rely on no one. After graduating from college, he shocks his father by telling that he has enlisted in the Navy and will enter training as a naval aviator. There he brings the same loner attitude he has had all of his life. He does however meet Paula, an attractive young woman who often attends base functions in the hope of nabbing a young officer and Sid Worley, a classmate with whom he forms a close bond. The training is difficult but not as tough as having to deal with their training officer, Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley who teaches Zack a lesson in the importance of relying on your friends and colleagues. With a great soundtrack, strong performances and the most rousing and emotional final scene in a movie since 'Rocky', 'An Officer And A Gentleman' deserves its place among the classics of movie history.
